The new followers are bright green, and improve the feeding reliability of many magazines.

To install the Sinclair followers, disassemble your mags and remove the old follower.

The Sinclair follower allows single-loading for long-range target shooting.

The new anti-tip followers are easy to identify: they are bright green and have a long leg on the front. The idea is that the longer leg prevents the follower from tipping inside the tube, and a follower that “tracks” straight up and down the tube is going to be more reliable. Why did it take more than 20 years to develop the new follower? Remember our discussion of the development of the M-16? As long as something worked reasonably well, it was left alone. The politics of the whole sorry mess were such that any investigation was bound to cause problems. Not until Sanchez made a batch of magazines that checked out in all the specs, but still posed mysterious feeding problems in full auto, did the powers that be investigate. The solution was to use the new followers. They proved so successful that soon after (the early 1990s) all government magazines were required to come with the new follower. Why is it such a hot aftermarket product? Because with the AWB/94, all new government magazines were verboten for civilian use. So, we all kept using our black-follower magazines.

As they needed rebuilding from use, shooters would investigate the new followers, and spread the word. Now, it is pretty common to see even old magazines with new followers.

The swap is easy. Disassemble the magazine. If you’re replacing springs, too, install the new spring on the new follower, reassemble and go test. If you’re just replacing the follower, work the old spring off the old follower, install it on the new, and reassemble.

High Power shooters sometimes need a new follower for a different reason: slow fire. At 600 yards you aren’t going to be loading up a magazine and blasting away. As a matter of fact, the ammo you’d be using there may not even feed in a follower. If you’ve got 80-grain bullets loaded long for more case volume, they won’t fit in the magazines. You need to load your rounds one at a time. Doing so with a standard magazine can be clumsy. Sinclair makes followers that replace the standard followers. They hold the bullet up out of the feed lips, so you can simply place a round in the new follower (which acts as a tray) and then press the bolt hold-open to close the bolt. The Sinclair follower is bright yellow so you won’t confuse it with a magazine set up to feed. Simply strip your magazine, replace the old follower with the Sinclair, and reassemble. The neat thing about the Sinclair follower is that since it doesn’t use the feed lips of the magazine, you can use any busted old magazine as your slow-fire mag. You can have a 20 (you’ll want a 20 to get low in prone) with cracked lips, busted
